Making the Stinky, Sticky, Slimy Beloved Superfood of Japan: NYrture Natto | food. curated.

But, to me, that’s fun, you know it’s interesting. It’s something to talk about. Nacho truly, is the Japanese cheese? It’s a vegan version of a you know, really complex umami rich, like washed rind, cheese and yeah. Many cheese lovers really enjoy natto and see that that parallel in the flavor profile, it’s a food that I feel like more people need to have access to, because I think it can benefit a lot of people by incorporating it into their diets hi.

My name is ana anat ani, i’m the founder and owner of nurture food, which makes natto in brooklyn new york natto is, is really a ubiquitous food and everyday food. That’s most commonly eaten for breakfast. Yes, I feel, like I have sort of taken on the mission of being a cheerleader, a spokesperson, an evangelist for natto in the in America, and it really is because I I truly believe that natto is just so special, so unique.

I think, if there’s any food on earth that deserves to be called a superfood, it’s not Oh in a weird way: I’m I’m an urban farmer, an urban microbe farmer, I grow bacteria and those bacteria eat soybeans and they help me produce natto yeah, I’m a nerd! So this is day one of nature’s natto making process every bath starts with this step, which is me hand sorting through the beans about the process and our beans are beautiful and fantastic.

I like to think that every single nacho being we sell, has passed underneath my eyes, I’m a microbiologist actually and that’s how I got into this business just being fascinated by by the by the power of of the microbial world. And so you know I’m interested in how consuming some of these good bacteria, these probiotics types of bacteria, in the form of fermented foods, how that impacts, human health, our first products, so those little white nuts are actually chemically pure umami taste.

I mean there’s documentation like written documentation describing natto for over a thousand years in the West and in America it’s virtually unknown. It makes me think that if more adults would come to natto with just an open minds, a lot more of them might find that they actually like it. This might be excessive, but I readed them ten times. You know soak them, agitate them and then dump out the water, and then they sit in the bath overnight are able to of to hydrate.

So they will swell to over twice twice the weight and volume. When I first learned how to make not two from a fifth generation not to maker in Tokyo, he told me that the most important step was to choose the best bean you could to start with, and he was right. The best nachos soybeans in America are grown in the northern Midwest, mostly in North Dakota, and something that a lot of people don’t realize is that most of the natto that’s made in the world ie the natto that’s made and sold in Japan is actually most of It is made from u.

S. Grown soy and the bulk of that also from North Dakota. Specifically, so we also have black soybeans and then another brown bean which is certified organic natto soybeans, are are very different from the typical commodity soybean. Thus they’re non-gmo sort of by definition, but soybeans that are used to make nacho by any decent automaker our really beans that have been selected carefully selected over generations to be ideal.

For this particular fermentation process. What makes nurture natto unique our natto is fresh. It’s never been frozen, unlike all all the natto that is imported from Japan is frozen before export and that’s important one because you know freezing and thawing foods can really affect its taste and its texture. But two if people are motivated by eating natto for its health benefits, freezing and thawing also significantly damages those health benefits as well.

Oh is it got some sugar to it? It has at least three completely unique properties that are, unlike any other food on earth. Okay, number one: it’s probiotic right: it’s fermented with bacillus subtlest, which is a member of the healthy gut microbiome. So it’s a probiotic bacteria that isn’t found in any other fermented foods, certainly in the West. So a second one is that natto is the most concentrated food source of vitamin k2 of any food on earth and it beats any other by an order of magnitude, and so vitamin k2 is essential for for bone health.

But it’s also very important for cardiovascular health. It doesn’t matter how much calcium you eat if you don’t have enough vitamin k2 to help recruit it out of your bloodstream and bring it to your bones. It accumulates and causes arterial calcification and leads to heart disease. The third reason is that there’s an enzyme named after natto, it’s called natto kinase, and this enzyme is a natural blood thinner.

It has an enzymatic activity which actually has been shown to be capable of breaking down blood clots and the only natural source of it is natto. Well, there are some cardiologists, actually you who are starting to promote. Not to so you know, we’re really hoping to work with health, healthcare providers to educate them and hel them educate their patients. Whether your reason is the vitamin k2 or the natto kinase content or or the probiotics.

You know why not at least give it a try and eat the food which is one delicious. I think cheaper than taking a pill and three you get all three of these benefits at once. Many Japanese people have told me that our natto is the most delicious. Not toe that they’ve ever had either here or even in Japan, which is great to hear. I’ve also gone to the National nacho competition in Japan and met many natto producers from Japan and also gotten really high praise from natto producers in Japan.

I think this favorite moment of mine in the entire you know week-long process of making the nacho is that moment like after the fermentation is complete when I get to just pull back the film on on a fresh tray of nacho and just see that Nevernever stickiness, Those spiderwebs sort of coming off the off the beans and sort of the the the more resistance I have from those strings, the better. I know the fermentation is the better than natto, so it’s also sort of a quality control assessment at the same time, but I love that feeling of like the the biofilm resisting my pull so yeah.

We really look at this as as a long game we’re at the very beginning of it right now, but you know I I suspect it may take ten years, maybe twenty years or not so to become known enough for people to recognize it as a thing as A food so it’ll take a while and a lot of Education and exposure like this to just spread the word or logo. Many people comment on our logo. It’s actually a mathematical function, it’s a Fermont spiral or a parabolic spiral, and I loved it because the center of it kind of looks like a yin-yang symbol and to me it represents the two ingredients and our food, the soybeans and the probiotic bacteria.

It’s sort of coming together and synergizing and making something better, bigger, more beautiful than the two components alone.

Wellness Routine + Healthy Habits

They have everything from like nutrition bar new protein powders, pink hair. To make up the things everyone talks about, but you’re kind of like where the heck do you get that’s where so I will have all the products that I specifically talk about linked below as well as I are the site, it’s a really great resource. This is like a lot of info know that you can always pick and choose which habits you want to incorporate.

You don’t have to do all them. You don’t have to do any of them. Yeah. If you guys haven’t already subscribed. Please hit the subscribe button. It would mean a lot to me and also go ahead and follow my Instagram if you’re interested, so what the first product category that I wanted to mention was essential oils, and I’ve talked about these recently in some of my articles. But I’ve been absolutely love.

Oil diffusing also, you can use essential oils in other ways as well. Those are two that I picked up for. My herb are the eucalyptus and teacher oil, which I love to diffuse throughout my phase II as they’re, both very calming and earthy cents, but they can also be used on their own use, tea tree oil as a spot treatment for my acne. If you guys have been following me for a while, you know that I really struggle with acne.

I know it doesn’t seem like it, I’m wearing a ton of makeup. To be honest, so teacher oil actually works as a spa trip, but you don’t want to use it all over your face. I have this written down, excited onna pronounce it, but it unblocked the sebaceous gland acts as like a solvent. So, since teacher oil is an oil, don’t go in and kind of break up the dirt and lift and remove it away. It’s like a natural antibacterial, disinfectants, anti-inflammatory as well, and then eucalyptus is amazing.

It’s very calming to me. It feels like a spa like you. Can also mix it with like a little bit of lip balm and put it underneath your nose if you’re feeling sick, it’s like a natural decongestant, so those are my two favorite essential oils. I also love lavender and a bunch of other blends, but you can find like pretty much every essentially on. I are checking with the oil trials on some facial oils that I love incorporating into my skincare routine.

So the first one is rose Hedy Doyle, it’s packed with vitamin A and C which are like two of the best ones to use for your skin. It’s also filled with antioxidants and fatty acids, so it really helps to like firm and plump the skin, and it also helps with acne scar fading as well as acne in general and oil that I wanted to talk about. Omers, cocoa butter formula, multi effect perfecting facial oil, I’m obsessed with this stuff.

I love this Palmer’s cocoa butter brand. I use their coconut body lotion as well as their coconut oil. This oil particular also smells amazing a little bit more like sweet almond oil in it. So I’m assuming that’s where it’s coming from skin perfecting ingredients, its cocoa butter, which is a protective plan to extract retina, which I always look for products with retinol, because it increases cell turnover.

It’s really good for anti-aging, as well as acne vitamin C, which brightens complexion in tone and then vitamin E which helps prevent cell oxidation and then there’s also 9pr oils. I usually do the rosehip seed oil at night and then the perfecting facial oil in the morning and at the skincare Department. I also picked up a face mask and I love face max face mask. Why can I not speak for the purpose of yes? They are good for your skin, everyone smile, but also to me they’re such a self-care thing like putting on a face, mask and really calming and relaxing to me.

I love a good clay mask. I know my roommates are a really big fan of the one that you mix with apple cider, vinegar. I think that one’s a little bit too harsh for me, I’m trying out this one. It is the French green clay, facial treatment. I love a clay mask, though really good for tightening and firming and drying out impurities, easy it just mixed with water, and it’s made of a 100 % French green clay.

I am can’t smile or move my face. Get next topic on. My list is daily vitamins. My recently incorporated two new vitamins, which I want to talk about magnesium and b12. These pill container, like your parents, have these, but once I got one of these and actually started to take this seriously, it’s like such a lifesaver that magnesium is written down, density, a better sleep, reducing stress and anxiety, and it regulates kind of like all of your Bodily functions in terms of vitamins I do it is best to get your vitamins from your Whole Foods, so foods that are also high in my museum or to dark leafy greens see the nuts dark chocolate and avocado.

It can never hurt to supplement on the side neck by teaming that I wanted to talk about the 12. So this is a fully active b12 again from dr. E fest with an increasing mood. Is it’s linked to serotonin and then it also improves energy levels, levels cell production in skin, hair and nails, and red blood cell nation and red font cells, bring oxygen to all of your different organs throughout the body.

So, when they’re not moving properly, that’s when you feel weak and fatigued also what’s cool about these ones is these are actually vegan and b12 is something that a lot of vegan are missing, because the main sources of b12 are found in animal from one we’re still Talking about supplementing my favorite way to incorporate superfoods are in smoothies. I take this tip from be well by Kelly. I will link her instagram down below which Gigi talks about like the Fab Four, which is protein greens, fiber and healthy fats and they’re.

Just basically like the key components to a healthy diet or most famous things, is the fat for smoothies after you drink one of these green smoothies. You feel like one of those memes, that’s like you drink like or you eat broccoli. It’s like I’m, the epitome of health, like that’s how I feel after one of these smoothie is super great way to incorporate all of these superfood powders that you may not be getting in your diet.

I’ve been doing the green superfood by amazing girl, wheatgrass barley, grass, spirulina spinach beet carrot, hace, broccoli and other supplement. I like to add to my smoothies as organic maca root powder. This stuff actually tastes. It smells kind of good and caramel e, something it also helped. Your athletic endurance, great as like a pre-workout meal, I’ll list, the greens with people in the description she will give it a try.

It’s like my favorite thing right now. I wanted to talk about another type of juice that I’ve been doing, which LRU juice all your juice for about two amazing for your digestive system, verifying your bloodstream as well as like purging your body of toxin. Do it is first thing in the morning, so your body can absorb all of the nutrients and then just have plain celery juice. Don’t add anything to it, so highly recommend the dark chocolate – and this is the primal chocolate eating evolved.

Crunchy caramel made with organic coconut sugar. I’ve been looking for chocolate that don’t have a sugar in them just cuz. For me, sugar triggers something in my brain that makes me just want to eat unhealthy and more sugar a little over four dollars on the iron site, whereas many of these, like paleo, coconut sugar or maple syrup off the bars, can go up to like eight or Nine dollars, like I love little kitchen ones, but they’re so expensive.

If you’re looking for a healthy alternative to crave your sweet tooth, this one is really good. I’ve already eaten the bar, of course. My last and final habit is tongue scraping, and this is an error’ Vedic. I think I’m pronouncing that probably wrong. I actually learned about this from the skinny confidential we’ve talked about before she swears my tongue scraping. What you want to do is the first thing you do when you get up in the morning is: go wash your face, brush your teeth and scrape your tongue as you sleep your mouth and face build bacteria.

The first thing that you want to do before you drink any water and take all that bacteria back into your system is get it out, and I’m literally just about to pack this to go home to Minnesota with me, helps with bad breath. So if you’re struggling with that, I’m honestly a huge proponent of dental hygiene love this right, I think I’m officially done. I think I’ve talked about every health thing that I’ve been doing lately it.

So I hope you guys enjoyed this article. Please give it a thumbs up. If you did I’ll leave any questions, I would love to chat more with you guys about all these subjects and if you have any old things that you’ve been working on, I would love to hear that I will see you guys in my next article. Give us a thumbs up if you liked it, I will see you guys very soon.

Plant-based Vegan Pantry Tour | Vitamins, Supplements, Superfoods, Grains, Beans & More!

So I recently did a vegan fridge tour and I had asked you guys if you’d be also interested in seeing what is in our pantry and there was a resounding yes. So today that’s what we’re going to do and while we don’t exactly have a pantry per se, I’m going to show you where we keep all of our bulk dragons, alright guys. So here it is in all its glory.

So we’re going to start down on the bottom drawer and work our way up. So this bottom drawer is where we keep all of our supplements and our superfoods, so any type of powder or supercede we might add, into a smoothie or nice cream and then daily supplements that we use to fill in any gaps nutritionally and for max as well. So these are the supplements that we grab and use daily. This is a vitamin d3 from Mary Ruth’s that we give to max just three sprays of that this b12 we take daily and give him just a teeny, tiny drop, and we take that every day as well, and then this is the new vitamin.

D3, we’ve been trying just to kind of change it up and it’s also summertime. So we don’t have to use a whole lot of it, but we’re really liking that right now and then these are dusty and eyes. Multivitamins, I’m still breastfeeding at 18 months. Max is a year and a half old, so I’m still taking just one of these prenatal prenatal multis every day I love, love it and dusty has immense multi. Some of our favorites here dusty, loves ashwagandha.

This is an adaptogen that he adds into his protein shakes. We’ve got some dried dragon fruit powder that makes your smoothie bold extremely pretty in pink. If he wants something, that’s going to go a little bit further than that frozen variety, a cow powder: this is a favorite of ours, we’ll add that to make chocolate, nice cream, coconut flakes to top our smoothie bowls with or to bake with turmeric.

This is one of the best anti-inflammatory powders to add to your smoothies. You can also make turmeric lattes with it blueberry powder, extremely extremely high in antioxidants matcha. So I have this organic green tea matcha powder that I sometimes like to drink. If I want a little jolt of energy, I’m not a coffee drinker, neither is dusty, he doesn’t do any caffeine, chia seeds, so this is probably the most used bag in this whole pantry.

So that’s why we have a giant bag of it. We always add this to smoothies we make chia pudding, we’re always grinding it and sprinkling it on Max’s meals, maca powder. So this is something we phase in and out of our smoothies. This one is a great adaptogen for hormonal balance, as well as energy, and sleep really love this taste and smell of it as well, particularly this kiva brand. We’ve got it on our amazon store, camu, camu, extremely high in vitamin c yeah, seven hundred and sixty percent vitamin C in just one teaspoon.

So if you’re feeling like you need a little boost during cold and flu season, that’s a great one. Acai, everybody knows acai powder. This is one of the highest sources of antioxidants. Of any berry on the planet also has healthy, Omega threes in it, which is kind of interesting, vanilla bean powder. So this is typically what I use to bake with or blend with in place of, vanilla extract, they’ve a lot more whole in pure, it’s just straight from the vanilla bean, and this would be our other most used other than the chia seeds is daily green boost.

I put a tablespoon of that in our smoothies every morning and it has a ridiculous amount of vitamins and minerals, especially folate vitamin K, four hundred and ten percent. It’s got lots of iron, manganese and all kinds of other good stuff, so super high in minerals, very alkalizing and anti-inflammatory. So, if you’re interested in trying out daily green boost, which is just a barley, grass juice powder, you can use eat, move rest and get a discount and for everything else, honestly, we buy mostly on Amazon, Prime, so we’ll have it linked below.

In the description on our amazon store moving on to the second drawer, this is the bulk of our pantry pun intended. So this is where we keep all of our bulk purchases. Keep in these mason jars, because it’s just a lot easier and cleaner for us. That being said, with Kovan 19, the bulk bins have been wiped clean. I think they’re trying to prevent the spread of germs. So it’s been really difficult to find bulk things, so we’ve had to buy more plastics and again, like I said in the refrigerator tour, we have a lot of plastics but we’re doing our best.

We use our reusable bags, whatever we’re able to, but things are a little bit bumpy right now so go easy on us, so you can see that I got to use my handy dandy label maker here, though I’ll walk you through some of our top used grains And legumes and beans over here on the far side, we have split red lentils, so these are definitely our most used. They’re super high in protein and super high in iron, they’re, really great for thickening up curries and soups and stews quinoa is actually not a grain.

It’s a seed and it is a complete protein. We use that one, a ton, it’s very versatile brown rice, use that a lot as well steel cut oats. I love to use to grind up into flour for baking these are not white rice. This is green lentils. Those are great for making like a mock meat kind of like taco meat dish or a lentil Bolognese we’ve got oat groats. These are one step above steel cut oats. So again, usually all I use those for is blending into flour.

I’ve got red kidney beans. Those are great for chilies, more lentils, more lentils, and these usually, I have garbanzo beans dried in here, but right now I actually have buckwheat. This is another seed that is a complete protein like quinoa and usually what I like to do is soak and sprout it and then I’ll dehydrate it. So it’s kind of like a crispy crunchy smoothie ball topper. It’s really really good.

Here. We’ve got our canned beans. This is kind of just as a backup for those lazy days when cooking from dry isn’t really an option. So we’ve got black beans, cannellini beans, canned pumpkin – I like to make things for max with that and bake with it. We’ve got coconut cream, so fun fact. Instead of buying light, coconut milk or even just regular, coconut milk, buy coconut cream and dilute it with water yourself, it’s the same exact thing: this is just more bang for your buck.

We’ve got this red curry paste. This is something we always put in, like our red lentil, sweet, potato, veggie stews, it’s kind of like a Thai and or Indian flavor strained Tomatoes. So we even buy this in a glass bottle instead of a jar. This is what we use to make everything from pizza, sauce to pasta, sauce to thickening up our stews you’ll, also see it sometimes in different varieties labeled as tomato puree.

So the reason we like this is because it has one ingredient, organic strained, Tomatoes. A lot of canned and jarred sauces are going to be high in sugar and salt and fat, so instead we just use this and we just season it ourselves. It got a couple of dried bean medleys from Bob’s Red Mill over here that we honestly like never use but they’re great in the winter time amaranth. So this is yet another complete protein.

It’s a seed even smaller than quinoa, and this one is by far the highest and iron. So this is what we’ve been enjoying making for max in a lot of his little recipes to get extra iron in his diet, and then we also found an Emirates flour. So this has been great to add into waffle and pancake recipes, even putting a tablespoon into a shake for extra protein and iron in the far back here. This is the fun stuff, so saltines are basically a firmer feeling under the weather.

There are days where I’ve been sick and all I could stomach was crackers, and then we’ve got some different pastas. Our favorite is Bond’s up. This is all chickpea, pasta and again super high in protein and iron max loves them and they just came out with a plant-based mac and cheese. It is awesome, you guys so check it out and a gluten free brown rice, pasta. We do try to stay gluten. Free as much as possible, personal favorite is this millet and brown rice ramen.

So it’s not flavored or anything. You add your own seasoning, but it is so good and then in the back. We have these for homemade sushi over here on the door every once in a while I’ll find a really cool kind of like infographic thing to print out, and this one is the PB 3 plate from plant-based juniors. So plant-based, juniors and nutritious Vita are my go-to resources for evidence-based toddler and infant nutrition.

So these are just helpful reminders for us as we’re preparing Max’s daily meals, to make sure that we’re meeting his vegan plant powered nutritional needs your drawer up. So this is Dusty’s. Favorite this is our nuts nut, butters and kind of our snack drawer. So we have a lot of dried fruits on this shelf again, a lot of these things go on top of smoothie bowls or we’re just grabbing and munching after meals and they’re all super nutritious.

So this is considered nature’s candy front and center is my personal favorite. We’ve got medjool dates. They are super juicy and delicious right now, so I love to just pick these and pop them in the freezer. For some reason they taste so much better. That way – and I also bake with them so I’ll puree them into date – paste right behind there is dusty and ice other favorite snacks. So these are the broken s.

We’ve got the trail mix, which is so good because it has the sweet crunchy fruit in with the nut, and it’s like a hard crunchy shell, but they’re so good. You’ve just got to trust me on that and then just the plain bucha is really amazing, as well Dusty’s go-to, after-dinner snack is these dark chocolate chips over here we’ve got some unsweetened and no-salt-added almond butter. So, just one ingredient: that’s what you always want to look for with your nut and seed butters, no added oil, salt or sugar.

We’ve got peanut butter, our new favorite and Max’s favorite. Is this raw cashew butter? It’s the highest source of iron of any of these nut butters, so organic coconut butter. This is what we recommend using to flavor up your soups and stews instead of coconut oil for extra fat. If that’s what you’re wanting, because this is just 100 % whole coconut, so it doesn’t have the fat extract it. It’s the whole coconut and it’s got a little bit of a sweet taste and really like to add that to bulk up Max’s recipes right up front.

Probably our most used nut is cashews just simply because they’ll have to soak them and blend them into like a cashew cream or cashew cheese sauce behind that we have rolled oats. So this is something I use again for baked goods. I make a ton of oat flour, that’s basically my go-to for all my baked goods. We also make oatmeal pretty much every other day, dusty and Max both enjoy it so funny story.

I ordered some holy basil on Amazon because, after our Costa Rica retreat, we learned so much about holy basil being like the top of the top as far as adaptogenic superfoods. It’s just great for everything it heals everything literally, so I went on Amazon and ordered some holy basil tea and it showed up in a two pound bag. So we’ve been keeping it in this giant jar we’ve also got almonds and all kinds of seeds.

We’ve got sunflower seeds, pecans pistachios walnuts and even some organic Nebraska grown popcorn. Some of both of our favorite smoothie Bowl toppers are cacao nibs. These are fantastic, so high in antioxidants, white, mulberries and goji. Berries are Dusty’s favorite, typically, dried fruit is also going to be really high in iron. I know I’m talking a lot about iron, but it’s a nutrient of extreme importance when you have infants and toddlers running around.

So we’ve been really focusing on that, and these are my new favorite go-to crunchy munchy for the top of my smoothie bowls they’re, just freeze-dried organic strawberries, they’re, it’s so so good. Last but not least, top shelf is pretty much devoted to all kinds of baking, flours and powders and potions, but over here on the far side is one of our favorite snack crackers Mary’s gone crackers. These are organic.

They are full of just a whole bunch of different seeds, they’re even oil-free, and Max loves them too. We are oil free, but we keep olive oil on hand just to again add extra calories. Healthy fats to Max’s meals is totally fine for toddlers and babies to consume a little bit of oil, and then we’ve got some brewers yeast. So this is something that I’ve experimented with with baking and even blending into smoothies.

It’s supposed to be a galactic OGG. In other words, it’s supposed to help increase your milk supply, so if you’re breastfeeding, you might want to look into Brewers ease so other than b12 and d3. Another nutrient of concern, especially for vegans and vegetarians, is iodine. So we get our iodine from sea vegetables. This is the kind you want to go for is USDA Organic, that’s from the Maine coast, so this is dulse flakes, but it looks like fish food to be honest, but you can sprinkle it on salads.

You can even put it in soups, and this kelp is actually in, like extremely large seaweed pieces. It’s super salty. So if you have a salt craving, it’s good to munch on this best way to make sure that you don’t overdose on iodine would be to actually drop some of this into a boiling water of soup. Last thing over here in the corner is our go-to cereal. So this is by Nature’s Path: organic. It’s called Mesa sunrise.

This is completely gluten. Free, USDA, Organic and honestly dusty has a bowl of this. Almost every night, late night before bed, it’s hilarious and Max has kind of entered the picky toddler stage. So if there’s ever a time where he won’t eat his food and I’m starting to get nervous like hey, you need to eat buddy, then I usually can get his appetite revved up. If I give him some of this cereal and back here, I’m not going to go into too much detail because I rarely use this.

But we’ve got some different, balsamic vinegars and flavorings like that, and then some baking soda cornstarch and different flours, coconut flour, brown, rice, flour, arrowroot powder, buckwheat, flour and coconut sugar, which we very rarely use and that pretty much sums it up so right now, I’m actually Soaking some dry chickpeas that we’re going to pop in our instant pot and use some way shape or form for dinner.

Most likely we’ll make some chickpea patties so over here in this corner of the kitchen, is where we keep more dry goods. This is pretty much just protein powders, you guys know some warrior is our go-to. If you guys haven’t already, we definitely highly recommend checking out the warrior blend, so we love the natural vanilla and the chocolate and they’re super super high in iron again, and you get 20 % off.

We will link it below use our discount code, eat move rest and give it a go. Then down here is the mother lode. So this is where we keep our potatoes and our sweet, potatoes, onions and garlic. We bought some of these tin cans and it works out great for keeping all of these puppies in place. My personal favorite, this red-colored, it’s kind of a reddish sweet potato. It’s called a Japanese yam, it’s white inside and they taste like birthday cake, no joke.

Last but not least, this is our spice cupboard and I would say this is where the goldmine is, if you’re looking to transition to a plant-based or vegan diet, the best way to enjoy your meals is to flavor them. So, of course, salt and pepper is always good, but there are so many other options out there. If you kind of get into ethnic cuisine, like we love to make a lot of Thai foods and Indian foods, you really have to build up your spice cabinet.

Some of our favorites are curry powder and garlic powder Cayenne cumin and for something sweeter and really like to use pumpkin pie, spice and cinnamon. So because we buy in bulk and we don’t have a whole lot of space in our kitchen. We do store excess and extra down in the basement, especially with quarantine, we’re trying to make as few trips as possible to the grocery stores. So we do have a lot of overflow down in the basement.

All right, you guys I’m about to make some overnight oats. I hope you enjoyed the pantry tour. So here we sit in our backyard on our patio on the most perfect of gloomy days. It’s chilly right now and what better day to film a article for you guys about how to be happy, how to be happy in spite of your situation when the Sun isn’t shining outside or even within? How can you want remain happy? Ultimately, happiness comes from a sense of joy, purpose and satisfaction right.

So some of the happiest places in the world, like Costa Rica, Singapore and Denmark are living. These measurably happy lives based on a set of factors and principles that they incorporate into their daily lives. We’re going to be sharing those with you today, so hopefully you can take some of what they’ve done to become happier and incorporate it into your own life right. We are also going to share with you the simple things that we do on a daily basis that bring us happiness and joy.

So naturally we would start with eat move rest because that’s kind of what we’re all about here, but because we’ve got a stress, busting smoothie recipe, for you guys we’re going to save that until the end, so stay tuned, tip number one invest in your hobbies and New experiences, it can be really easy to get caught up in the day-to-day work grind, and it is no bueno. So this is where we were two or three years ago.

We loved article photo all this type of work. We want to express ourselves artistically and we had a message to share out of health and wellness, but we didn’t know how to necessarily do it. This led us on a scouring Google search of reading YouTube articles, how to buy a camera, how to take photos? How to edit article, how to start a blog post or blog and that ultimately led us to skill sure where we have basically learned how to do what it is we’re doing right this very second right, so one of our favorite YouTube blogs actually had a message About skill share that kind of piqued our interest, so skill share calm.

It was we went on the website, and the awesome thing is that it makes the good choice the easy one, because you don’t have to go sit in a classroom on the campus and not be able to afford your classes, maybe not even love the classes that You paid for so that being said, skill share is totally affordable. It’s an online learning platform to help you further, your curiosities give –‘t is maybe even your career.

Yes, so we are super excited because we get to offer you guys a free two-month trial to our first 500 subscribers to click the link in our description below yea. So you can take classes on everything from how to chop a vegetable to how to start a blog to how to make a youtube article. You guys want a dedicated article on how we started our YouTube blog. Let us know in the link below that being said: new hobbies was just one part of our tip number one.

The other part is new experiences, so we absolutely love to travel and see the world. So we kind of combined our hobby with new experiences by bringing our cameras everywhere with us on the go. So we encourage you guys to travel somewhere book a trip. You’ve never been and tell your story in your own unique creative way. Tip number two get out in nature: go for a hike climb, a mountain swim down a river get in a canoe, whatever you have to do to get out and explore the world around you.

It can be as simple as flipping your shoes off and walking barefoot in the grass. This is a fantastic thing that you can do if you’ve been working at your work desk all day slip your shoes off at the end of the day and go walk around in the grass get yourself some pets get yourself. Some plants bring the outdoors in we’ve, got a plethora of houseplants. You guys have seen in one of our recent YouTube articles or better yet start a garden.

So tip number three have a spiritual practice, whether that’s sitting down every morning or evening, to read scripture to meditate to pray to simply give thanks get out in nature like Aaron mentioned before. Maybe you take a trip, go to Italy like we did and experience the awe and the wonder, there’s so much beauty in this world, and we say it’s God. We say it’s our Creator that has given us everything that we have.

He gives us the strength and the peace to remain happy and that’s our spiritual practice and we seriously recommend for everyone out there find a community and be a part of it. So these happiest places in the world. One of the things that they have in common is they live within walking distance from a church, a market a park, maybe even a gym, so living within walking distance from your community makes it that much easier to invest time with your community worst case.

You can invest your time at work, spending time getting to know those you work with, or even better find an online community like you’re doing right now, reading our blog, so our next tip is work. Do what you love or find a way to make your work fun because, let’s be honest, we can’t all quit our day jobs. I happen to be a landscaper by trade. I’ve got a trailer full of mulch to get to work on, but I love it and it’s not because it’s easy, but it’s because I love it, so do something you love or like we said before, find a new hobby that can maybe turn into something that Can make you money that could be a new source of income for you at the end of the day, if you can’t enjoy what it is, you’re doing, set boundaries between work and play and make sure to make the time for play healthy habit.

Number six is spend enough time with family and get the emotional support that you need so dusty just talked about work-life balance and it’s super important to not get too wrapped up in your own schedule and set that time for friends, family and loved ones. Right. So obviously, that’s a new thing for us, especially with max who, by the way, is passed out right here next to us. Okay, so we are learning as a small family as a new family.

How to find that intimacy that tucks, that that togetherness time we are so close to our parents and our siblings we’re super fortunate. So we take full advantage of that and there’s much family time, as we can great, so we’ve been able to share in so many exciting experiences with them. They’ve been able to see max grow up after max was born. We found ourselves going stir-crazy, so we found a lot of joy getting out getting by the pool going to the farmers market doing these things with our friends and with our families.

So we should all have at least a couple of close friends or family members that we can confide in that we can share anything and everything with get things off of our chest. It can almost be considered a form of there. In fact, I know that I feel a sense of release when I share things even with dusty, but find a couple of people and don’t be afraid to open up right, but maybe you’re thinking all my family is gone or I moved away.

There is no family even close to me. Well, your friends can be you do like we did in LA when we did our meetup or come on a retreat and join our eat. Move rest family with us and also on that note, aside from sharing your feelings, talk touch intimacy, so this is something that was totally new to me. When I came into Dusty’s family, I didn’t come from a very huggy touchy-feely family, but all of a sudden I was showered with hugs and handshakes galore, multiple upon arrival and departure, so it felt new and uncomfortable.

But now I’ve really come to love. It number seven practice gratitude and give back right. So this right here is a gratitude journal. This tiny note looks that’s right by my bed and every so often I’ll, open it and jot down two to three things that I’m grateful for so a lot of times. We can get caught up in social media and one of the downfalls of it is that it can make a spoke to me from time to time.

Maybe we wish that we looks different or we live somewhere different. Maybe we wish we had more than what we already have. The list goes on and on, but if I can be thankful so that I already have, I realize just how much I do have and giving back so Ann and I have made it made it a habit to give our time once in a while to volunteer. Like with the Special Olympics or a bike camp for children with disabilities, or even at our church, this last winter, my mom did a fundraiser for sleeping bags for the homeless.

Giving back can be super easy too, maybe you’re in the Starbucks drive-thru and you pay it forward or maybe you pop online and you donate to one of your favorite charities. We can link some of our favorites below in the description, so a healthy habit. Number eight is to move whether you’re going for a run or a ride, or maybe you just like to dance moving, produces good stress which in turn releases feel-good endorphins moving your body will make you happy.

Sometimes I spend too much time on my computer. I just feel drained of energy, it seems counterintuitive, but honestly, your body will give you more energy. So, on a day like today, when the rain has finally stopped and I’m feeling a little bit groggy a long walk with Aaron and Max is going to probably be the thing that makes me feel better, but I’m actually thinking about a bike ride tip number 9.

Rest little man, it’s just waking out from probably his third map of the day and one thing’s for sure babies know when they need to rest the rest as a new mom. I think it’s safe to say I know a thing or two about being sleep-deprived. But that being said aside from getting your eight hours of sleep, like we always say there are a ton of other ways that you can get your rest, so practicing meditation and mindfulness.

Even just kicking your feet up and spending some quality time with your loved ones again, so you can see a lot of these healthy habits are intertwined and the more that you can practice them, the more that you’ll feel you’re not checking off a list, but they’re Free-Flowing and that they all make you happy working in conjunction together. Okay, you guys our last and final tip is to nourish your body.

It all starts with what’s on your plate and what ultimately ends up in your mouth. On that note, aaron has got an epic stress, busting smoothie, for you guys now. Finally, you guys I’m going to be sharing with you. Our stress busting, smoothie favorite. This one is our choco mock-up protein smoothie. So I’m going to be cooling you in as to why these ingredients are so beneficial at boosting your mood and diminishing your stress.

Keep in mind this recipe is for two for this choco maca smoothie. You will need six frozen, ripe, speckled bananas, two tablespoons of cacao powder, two tablespoons of hemp, seeds, 2, teaspoons of maca powder and optionally. One scoop of chocolate plant protein you’ll also need a liquid of your choice. We are doing anywhere from 1 to 2 cups of almond milk. It’s best, if you can leave your bananas to set out for 10 to 15 minutes before blending, especially if you don’t have a high speed blender, but we’re going to place them into our Vitamix here and the reason bananas are so fantastic for.

Fighting stress is because they’re high in potassium, which can help, is you have muscle, cramps or eggs or spasms get those bananas in ingredient number two and my favorite is cacao. So it’s super high in polyphenols and flavonoids, which are antioxidants that increase serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is responsible for better mood, better sleep and reduced anxiety. Next is hemp seeds. So, aside from the fact that they’re super high in fatty acids, they’re also extremely high in magnesium, so magnesium increases the amount of GABA, which is another neurotransmitter in the body.

When that goes up stress anxiety, depression goes you down. It also helps your sore muscles up. Next is maca powder, which is an adaptogen, so adaptogens. I know and she’s surviving some of the harshest climates on the planet, they’re fantastic at adapting within the body as well, so they can help with stress management, anxiety, libido, energy and sleep all of the above. Yes, please I’m adding in this optional plant protein, because, especially if you’re highly active, it’s going to be great for repairing your muscles.

Finally, your liquid almond milk is another that has all kinds of beneficial stress busting, but here we are max, is well slept. We’re about to be well fed with our stress, busting, choco, maca smoothies, my gosh they’re, so so good and guess what you guys. The Sun came out, amazing, so yeah. We hope you guys enjoy these tips. A lot of them are common sense. Yes, but sometimes we need a simple reminder to invest in eating, moving and resting better enjoying our work.

More one final bonus tip spend some time with a baby as difficult and stressful as being new parents can sometimes be max knows how to be healthy and how to be happy. He eats when he’s hungry. He sleeps when he’s tired, he poops on-demand, eat. Poop. Rest folks spend some time with a happy baby and you will ultimately learn how to be happier for yourself. So yeah, you guys don’t forget about this special offer linked in the description below.

porridge – VEGAN, GLUTEN & DAIRY FREE

I mention it’s going to peel, which milk do you want to choose for the porridge? Personally, I want to go for the hemp, because hemp milk per glass gives you 50 % of your omega-3, and it’s really hard to get omega-3 night. Naturally, apart from animal sources in the form of cod, liver oil – and you know it’s unsweetened and then here I got flax, sunflower, pumpkin and sesame seed to have goji berries is a great source of soluble fiber it just like hugs.

My guts, like my mummy, would want to when you put flax, especially when you heat it up. This kind of goo comes out of the seeds and that goo just helps everything going on that just lines, your guts, it’s also grain free, so you can do it on a paleo and SCD gaps. Diet and also flats is a great source sort of natural omega-3. As well, if you look, how dark is that just shows you like it’s just really dense in nutrients with this being a great source of iron, with a hundred grams containing about point nine milligrams of iron, which is about 11 % of your daily recommended allowance? Great, if you’re suffering from anemia, although I like, I have been in the past.

This is why I don’t forget about this baby. This really is the the backbone of the porridge is. Why do we even use those anyway? This is normal flaxseed before it’s ground up into a powder, looks more like a sea. Doesn’t it and naturally sweetening the porridge with date paste as opposed to loads of sugar or sweeteners, which also bugger everything up in the worry? It’s really tasty, really tasty.

A great thing, the paste is, you, don’t depict the pits out one at a time going to blitz this put two white bananas in I wish they could have pre, peeled bananas and some more I’m going to sprinkle some sunglasses all over the top, because I want That crunch and that texture, but also do I have some fruit. I and you to go shopping. Wait, do you think grapes would go there? No berries would do the Apple.

Would we have it? We have that poor and for the presentation, because it’s so important to eat with your eyes, we maintain it will start. We have loads of apple slices and I think it’s slightly fitting to put a little day right in the middle. Try it at home. Let me know what you think and see you next time, oh and subscribe. If you haven’t done so already,

7 hacks to Sulforaphane with the mature broccoli head and sprouts.

There are three concepts you should take away from this slide. Number one, the broccoli or sprout must be chopped or blended. In order for glucoraphanin and myrosinase to interact and create sulforaphane number two, the myrosinase enzyme is heat, sensitive and number.

Three glucoraphanin and sulforaphane are both heat stable. First, we must establish that the Morrow’s a-mei’s enzyme and isothiocyanate glucoraphanin are in separate cell walls, and this must be chopped or blended to begin the chemical reaction to create the sulforaphane molecule and voila. You have bioavailable sulfur, thin shop and hold method chopped raw broccoli and wait 45 minutes, which is the time researchers found it takes for the process to convert to heat stable sulforaphane after 45 minutes you can steam the vegetables to decrease the Quadro genic effects and make Other nutrients, more bioavailable for your dog, unfortunately frozen broccoli, won’t get you any sulphur thing because it was blanched prior to freezing.

This method destroys the heat, sensitive myrosinase, but guess what you can provide exogenous myrosinase and that’s just a fancy term for myrosinase that comes outside of the original food item. Researchers found that mustard, also cruciferous vegetable has a stable and high amount of the myrosinase enzyme in it. Feed specifically 1/4 of a teaspoon of mustard powder for 7 cups of broccoli is enough to yield a similar reaction of an endogenous myrosinase reaction.

Basically, a pinch of mustard powder added to your warmed in chapter blended, previously frozen broccoli will resolve the issue. Unless you are precise in the temperature and duration of your cooking, you likely destroyed the moroseness enzyme, so we’re just going to use the previous hack and added misogynous murasa knees to our cooked broccoli in the form of mustard powder or any chopped or blended cruciferous vegetable.

Mixed in with the cooked batch, the ultimate biohackers approach to bioavailable sulfur fame for the mature broccoli head follow me here we are going to heat a liquid to 100 degrees, Fahrenheit and drop the broccoli in that for about 10 minutes. Researchers found that at this temperature they were able to deactivate sulforaphane night trials, which does not convey the benefits of the sulforaphane molecule, while maintaining the meraz nays, I’m done for the conversion to sulforaphane you then blender chop and voila.

You have three and a half times more bioavailable sulfur fame than in any other hack for the mature broccoli head raw broccoli sprouts. It’s about to get real. You just take two to five day old. Broccoli sprouts and chopper blend serve to your dog and you have 10 to 100 times more bioavailable sulfur fame than any form of the mature broccoli head, the ultra ultimate bio hacker. This is the same hack that deactivates sulfur vein, nitriles with heat below the myrosinase heat point, but the soak temperature that the sprouts is 158 degrees Fahrenheit.

We still get the three and a half times more bioavailable sulfur vein tagged on top of the previous hack. We are talking therapeutic doses designed to mimic research studies in our evidence-based articles that can be used with low calorie and keto diets, where calories and carbs from the broccoli would be enormous. When trying to mimic these therapeutic doses for those people who just want to buy one of the many pills on the market touting sulfur bean content, researchers at the johns hopkins university already tested hundreds of pills.

First, the cost to the natural form is exponential. Secondly, researchers couldn’t find any brands with comparable quantities of sulfur fame, because the myrosinase enzyme isn’t stable in this form. So it’s best to follow one of these seven hacks for an affordable and fairly easy way to obtain the incredible benefits of the sulfur fame molecule. If you haven’t already done so be sure to read the history, evidence and process of sulfur fame for dogs, which also establishes the therapeutic doses of sulfur Fein, you can calculate with your vet, for your dog and since sprouts are often contaminated and expensive at your local Stores read my step-by-step article on how to make broccoli sprouts at home.

How to make fermented Pumpkin Seeds: Paralytic dewormer and nutritional diversity

You’ll need organic, unsalted, unroasted raw pumpkin seeds. I use a 32 ounce mason jar, but I’m making a lot of pumpkin seed molds for foster dogs, so decide what size you want to use. With this mason jar, I’m going to put approximately 2 and 1/2 cups we’re going to leave a little space for expansion. This really isn’t needed with pumpkin seeds, as it would be with something like an almond.

The next thing we’re going to put in is filtered water, and you want to fill it about halfway. I make my own homemade raw goat’s milk kefir and I let it separate them to curds and whey, and I collect my own way. You can store way in the fridge for about 6 months, so I just write the date on the bottom that I created the way and I keep it in the fridge for fermentation like we’re doing with pumpkin seeds or vegetables.

I use about a cup of whey and I pour it on top. If you don’t have access to way. There are a couple other hacks that you can do. You would fill it to the very top of the pumpkin seeds with a filtered water, and then you would take an acidic medium. You can use something like lemons or even limes, and you want to use about 2 tablespoons or you can use raw unfiltered apple, cider, vinegar, and if you don’t have either of those you can use salt, it does not remove phytic acid as much as the acids From some research into grains and legumes, fermentation is the best way to remove phytic acid from seeds and pumpkin seeds are very high in fighting acid.

We want to get that off before we give it to our dogs. You would let it soak for a minimum of 7 hours to 12 hours and follow the same process that we’re going to do with the way we’re going to move forward with the fermentation. The benefit of the fermentation is that the lactobacillus is better at removing the phytic acid at pre digests, the enzymes making the nutrients more bioavailable, and it basically does all the work for your dog.

You need to leave it in a warm place if it’s winter, where you are just wrap a towel, make sure that it is a warm which helps release the phytic acid. You don’t want it in the refrigerator or you don’t want it in a very cool home. Now we just need to put something on top and let it sit. I typically get a coffee filter and just put a rubber band about it, and I put it into the cabinet and let it ferment, and if it is wintertime in your house, is cool.

You might want to just grab a towel and wrap it around to keep it warmer through the night and then just go ahead and let it sit in summertime. You just put it on your counter. You do not want to put it in your refrigerator. That will stop the fermentation process. It doesn’t need to be hot. It should be around 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. I already set one aside last night with the two and a half cups of raw organic pumpkin seeds, a cup and a half filtered water and one cup of raw goat.

Mount kefir way – and I didn’t follow my own advice. Then I filled it to the top. So it’s spilling over remember to do that, give it some room because they will expand. You can do this next part over the think. If you’ve seen my sprouting articles, I collect the water from my sprouts. I use that nutrient-dense water, for my houseplants, my herbs and in my vegetable garden, and I can tell you I’ve already seen quite a bit of improvement in my houseplants using the sprouted water way, is also really great for your plants.

You can just dump this over the sink, and so whatever works for you need to get a spoon it’s so tight. Like I said, I didn’t follow my own advice that I’ve hacked up too tight. You need to leave I’ve been at the top, so it has a space to expand almost like a our cheese ISA and that’s completely normal anyway. So we have the seeds over a container, which I am capturing for my plants, otherwise feel free to do the service thing again.

You prefer to use filtered water um. I use the no chlorine or fluoride big berkey water and you really want to get a good rinsing, we’re rinsing all that phytic acid, that was removed from the fermentation process. Here’s my captured water for my plants, so we’re going to have another bowl to place that in at this point, you can feed your dogs, these rinse seeds. Now this won’t last more than a week in the refrigerator it will go rancid.

As you can see, I made a very large bats. I make them for foster dogs in our rescue, where I’ll want to do these for the three week series and they won’t stay in the refrigerator for three weeks. So what I do is, I blend them up in my Vitamix and I add a couple things that will increase that bioavailability and if there is any phytic acid left, I’m going to counter it with some of the foods that I’m going to be mixing in there.

We’re going to take the three cups of seeds and throw them in the Vitamix. Now you could just blend it like this, like I said, I’m going to do the ultimate biohacker approach to making these gel molds I’m going to use. This is raw goat, mount keeper that I have made at home, and it’s about two cups and remember: I have about three cups of raw pumpkin seeds, so we’re going to pour that tire amount in a little bit of vitamin C will help any loss of iron.

So the vitamin C counters that in melon B’s experiment with dogs, increasing vitamin D made them stronger, regardless of diet in the amount of phytic acid, not study those that were on a diet, high and phytic acid excreted. A lot of calcium, vitamin D and re, adding calcium, mitigates those issues. While we did remove the phytic acid through the fermentation process being extra conscientious and throwing some Rocky Mount.

Calcium also balances the high phosphorus content in pumpkin seeds. Vitamin C mitigates the reduction of iron and perhaps other mineral losses from phytic acid. Now we’re going to blend this and pour it into gel molds to freeze and use as necessary. Since I’m going to be doing in two and a half weeks dewormer, I will be keeping this in the freezer and then I’ll take the mold the day that I need them, so they soften up and they’re a little more palatable.

At this point you can add other things that you need for your dog that won’t contradict what you have in here. So you don’t want to use anti microbials or antibacterials in here, so I wouldn’t be putting coconut oil, but you could put some ghee. You could also add colostrum probiotics. I use SBS, oh I’ll, baste organisms for some dogs, so whatever you want to add in that doesn’t contradict the main ingredients and the purpose of this.

That would be fine to do so. At this point, all right we’re going to blend this up and I pour our mold. These are all human grade ingredients. It actually tastes pretty good. This is a really great nutrient-dense way to get diversity into your dog’s diet. That’s bioavailable, easy for them to assimilate and add some really great nutrients that are lacking in some kibble and raw diet, such as manganese and vitamin E.

This is a complete vitamin E complex. It’s not just your alpha tocopherol, but your alpha beta Delta and gamma tocopheryl. This makes it more bioavailable and easier to assimilate. If you enjoyed this article and would like to see more like it, please consider liking, sharing or commenting below
